What your first session looks like
At the start of our session I start with a subjective assessment. I'll ask you to tell me about your injury and then I'll ask you a lot of questions. This helps me piece together the picture of how your injury happened, start working towards a diagnosis and discover what really matters to you in your recovery and what your goals are. Sometimes I am able to form a likely diagnosis just from what you've told me.
After chatting I will then ask you to stand up so I can assess your posture and see how you move. An important piece of my assessment is being able to see the injured body part and the area around it so please dress appropriately or bring it with you to change into.
From there I'll be doing my hands on assessment. I tend to assess and do hands on treatment as I go along but I will always tell you what I'm doing and what my findings are.
Everyone will be sent home with homework. I like my exercises done 5 days a week, the bare minimum being 3 days a week. Homework can be stretching, mobility exercises or strength exercises. I try to keep the amount of stuff I give you achievable and easy to incorporate into your day. I will provide theraband free of charge if you need one.
For most injuries I will want to follow up with you weekly for the following 3-4 weeks. Follow ups tend to be 30 minutes and I will rebook you at the end of our session. Feel free to book those when booking your intial assessment.
By the end of the session you will have:
- a working diagnosis of your injury or general idea of what is causing your pain
- exercises to be doing at home between appointments
- what you can and can't do with your injury
- a return to sport plan if appropriate
- a follow up appointment booked if needed
